Have you ever found yourself not knowing what to write and scrolling through Unsplash in the hope that a photo will inspire your next essay, which will be read by thousands? Welcome to the club, friends! That just happened to me this afternoon.
My heart was beating a little too fast because of the intense heat that has returned to France, and I had a strong urge to write, as I do almost every day of the week. No, it wasn't Taylor Swift who inspired me to pick up my pen. But it could have been!
I clicked on the Unsplash tab on my MacBook Pro and scrolled through the photos. Then I looked for some more. I chose the one you saw when you opened this post, opened my favorite writing app, Bear, and found myself staring at the screen below.
I put on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack and started writing these very words. So, what am I going to tell you?
I once wrote an essay about having nothing to say. It was quite successful and made people laugh a lot. I won't share it here though, because I published it on Medium — you know it's never a good idea to talk about your exes. I hope that bitch has been crying her eyes out since I left her!
Forgive me, but talking about her makes my hair stand on end. Let's change the subject, as discussing this is not in keeping with the sweet melody that accompanies Tolkien's universe. So, what were we talking about? Oh yes, the fact that I don't have much to say today. I hope you're still there!
I'm such a nice, funny guy that you enjoy spending time with me, even when we're not talking, right? Of course, we'd be better off sitting by a high mountain lake, watching birds of prey circle above us and gazing at the pure, clear water while searching for the true meaning of life. Even better, we could be neighbours in a small hobbit village. We could spend our days writing stories and counting the hairs on our feet.
It would be wonderful!
For now, though, I'm in France, while you're probably somewhere in the United States, smiling behind your phone or computer screen. It's better than nothing, right? What else can we do for now?
Well, I wrote about 450 words even though I didn't have anything to say at first. It won't change the world, but it makes me feel good. There's no harm in that, right? How's your day going? Are you going to write and publish something today?
Let me know, friends!
Tom
